Fourth International Conference on Austroasiatic Linguistics (ICAAL 4)
Bangkok, October 29 - 30, 2009
website: www.icaal.org
Theme: An Austroasiatic Family Reunion
First Call for Abstracts
After a decades-long absence, the biannual Austroasiatic Linguistics conference series was revived in 2007 with a highly successful meeting at Deccan College in Pune, India. As we travel to Bangkok in 2009, we take advantage of Thailand's central location to hold an inclusive conference with scholars and speakers representing every branch of Austroasiatic. Please join us in fulfilling our conference theme: An Austroasiatic Family Reunion.
Call for abstracts
Participants will be allocated 20 minutes to speak to their papers, plus 10 minutes for discussion.
Deadline for abstracts: September 1, 2009
Notice of acceptance: September 15, 2009 (early notification on request)
Format: Submit abstracts using the form at the last page of this circular (also downloadable separately from the website at http://www.icaal.org/). Please type the abstract details directly into the form; this will help produce an abstracts book for distribution at the meeting. Abstracts will also be available online.
Acceptance: Abstracts will be assessed by an independent academic committee to ensure high standards. The ICAAL 4 very much wants to support less senior scholars and those working in difficult circumstances: we encourage early submission of abstracts so that the academic committee can offer timely feedback or advice on proposed presentations. Formal acceptance of abstracts will be made on or after September 15th. Early acceptance may be requested (if needed for travel/funding). Late submissions may be taken in unusual circumstances.
Themed panels
The organizers encourage motivated scholars to lead and coordinate themed panels. Panels are expected to be sessions of 1½ or 2 hours duration, allowing 3 or 4 presentations on a common theme. Panel leaders will take responsibility for recruiting and organizing panels, in consultation with the organizers. Presently at least 2 themed panels are proposed:
Monic, lead by Christian Bauer christian.bauer@staff.hu-berlin.de
Iambic effects in AA languages, lead by Ken Gregerson ken_gregerson@sil.org
Other panel suggestions are welcome, please contact the organizers.

Registration fees for the meeting are:
Thai Baht 3,000 [International & Thai Participants]
Thai Baht 2,400 [Student Participants]

Cash payment on arrival is for the registration fee only option. All payments will be in Thai Baht.

Welcome dinner
No extra charge will be levied for the conference welcome dinner.
Accommodation
The conference will be held at the Institute of Language and Culture for Rural Development, Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, Nakhon Pathom (approx. 30 minutes drive from Bangkok).
The organizers have negotiated special room rates for accommodation on campus as follows:
C.U. Apartments: Thai Baht 700 per night
The Grand Home Apartments: Thai Baht 700 per night
Salaya Pavillion Hotel: Thai Baht 1,400 to 2,000 per night (single/double, includes breakfast)
To obtain these discounted rates, please book and pay for your accommodation in advance using the registration form provided. Participants may make independent arrangement for accommodation, but should note that Salaya is outside of Bangkok proper, and has few guesthouses besides those mentioned above. We strongly recommend that you take the option of pre-booked rooms on campus.
Note: Participants who may have difficulties meeting the cost of accommodation are encouraged to discuss with the organizers the possibility of assistance, see Financial Assistance below.
Financial assistance
The Center for Research in Computational Linguistics (with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities) will provide modest financial assistance to researchers and AA-language speaker/scholars who might not otherwise be able to afford travel and/or conference costs.
Recipients of these honoraria can contribute to ICAAL 4 by discussing current research and resource availability in their home countries with conference participants.
If you would like to be considered for assistance, please contact provide the organizers with the following:
Funding is limited, so please submit requests for assistance in a timely manner. Note that honoraria will not be paid in advance of the conference date.
Publication of ICAAL 4 papers
Participants are encouraged to submit their full papers to the Mon-Khmer Studies Journal (published by meeting sponsors SIL International and Mahidol University). A special ICAAL issue of Mon-Khmer Studies may be published, and/or papers may be published in regular issues.
Participants are also encouraged to submit draft papers and handouts for distribution and archiving via the website http://www.icaal.org/. Although we encourage submission to Mon-Khmer Studies, participants are free to publish their papers elsewhere.
