About Bangkok
Weather
October in Bangkok comes at the end of the rainy season.  Wet weather should not come as a surprise; fortunately it is so warm that you'll dry off quickly!  Be sure to bring a small umbrella, and a heavy plastic bag to wrap your computer or papers just in case.  Most people don't bother with raincoats, and galoshes are unknown in the Kingdom.
Medical Facilities
High-quality medical care is readily available in Bangkok.  Hospitals that cater to foreigners and/or are relatively close to the conference site include:
    Bamrungrad Hospital
    Bangkok Nursing Home
    Phaya Thai II
Money and Banking
The local currency is the Thai baht, which has varied between roughly 30 - 42 to the dollar in recent years (see x-rates.com for current exchange rates).  ATM machines of every type are readily found; there is usually a modest service charge, but exchange rates are reliable.  Credit cards can be used, but either the vendor or the credit card issuer may impose a surcharge of several percent.
Food
Food of all types can be found in Bangkok, inclding kosher, halal, and vegetarian cuisine.  Food sold by roadside vendors is for the most part safe (most hazards come from adulterants, rather than pathogens, and you probably won't be here long enough for them to do much damage!).  Use common sense, and favor foods that are prepared hot and/or fresh just before they are served.  Note that tipping (aside from coins or a small bill) is not expected.
Internet
Internet services are readily available, and Internet cafes are easily found.  Download speeds are often in the 1mb range, and international upload speeds half that or less.  Viruses (including document viruses) are rampant, so be careful.
Telephone
Thailand uses GSM 900 / 1800   Prepaid SIMs are readily available.
Transportation
Bangkok has both above ground (Skytrain) and below ground (MRT) light-rail transportation systems; they are the best way to get around the city.  Taxis are readily available, and always use meters.  Ferries ply the Chaopraya River, fares are very cheap and they're a pleasant trip.
Sightseeing
Bangkok has a multitude of sights.  For a bird's-eye view of the city, try the top of the Baiyoke Tower in Pratunam (near the Siam Square Skytrain interchange).
